Welcome

Mining and tourism account for nearly 12 per cent of Australia's gross domestic product and one-in-15 Australian workers earn their livelihood from the industries covered by this portfolio. Mining alone brings $80 billion a year of gross value added into Australia's economy while the electricity and gas supply industries add a further $17 billion. Tourism accounts for $1 in every $10 of Australia's export earnings. Australia is a resource-rich nation and the development and export of these natural resources contributes substantially to the strength of our economy.

The Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism provides advice and policy support to the Australian Government regarding Australia's resources, energy and tourism sectors. The Department develops and delivers policies to increase Australia's international competitiveness, consistent with the principles of environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
