A FOCUS ON THE FUTURE OF DOMESTIC TOURISM

Looking to the future is the focus of the latest report in a research series on domestic tourism in Australia, released today by the Hon Martin Ferguson MP, Minister for Tourism.

The report by Tourism Research AustraliaThrough the looking glass: The future of domestic tourism in Australia – highlights the way forward to strengthen domestic tourism.

"Domestic tourism is critical in encouraging the dispersal of tourism dollars into regional areas. This in turns helps strengthen the future sustainability of the tourism industry and regional economies," Minister Ferguson said.

The report, which can be downloaded from www.tra.australia.com, examines future patterns of tourism activity, the resultant implications for tourism product, and investigates how the Australian domestic tourism industry can best prepare itself for change while adapting to meet the challenges of the future. It is the third in a domestic tourism research series by Tourism Research Australia that has supported the development of the Domestic Tourism Action Plan.

"Tourism is not unique in the challenges it faces. In a globalised world, all industries must adapt and develop strategies to enhance their future sustainability. The tourism industry already recognises the intensity of the current market and this report provides some powerful information for the industry to use to drive its future growth," Minister Ferguson said.

"It is also important to consider our national tourism industry in the broader context of the significant economic challenges Australia faces both domestically and as part of the global economy. The Government will work with industry and the community to address these challenges. However, industry has a critical role to play in this partnership with the Government to ensure that it is prepared to meet the demands of the future.

"As part of this partnership with the industry, the Australian Government will further explore innovative approaches to encouraging domestic tourism including a strong economy, cultivating the right environment for industry growth and investment, taking pressure off family budgets and enabling working Australians to take leave and enjoy a holiday in this great country of ours.

"As part of this partnership with Government, I urge tourism operators and industry bodies to take advantage of the information provided in the domestic tourism research series to enable themselves to achieve a stronger and more competitive industry sector.

"As the report concludes, it is up to us all to work on weaknesses and build on strengths. In doing this, we shape our destiny. It's an exciting time to be involved in tourism and there are many great opportunities out there to be seized. In partnership with industry, the Government is ready to help tourism in Australia realise these opportunities," Minister Ferguson concluded.
