$1.5M BUDGET UPGRADE FOR WONTHAGGI TOURISM ICON

The Hon Martin Ferguson MP, Minister for Tourism, has announced Budget funding of $1.5 million to upgrade an important piece of Wonthaggi's history and an iconic tourism facility.

The $1.5 million funding is for the StateMine 2009 Working Group to redevelop and enhance the visitor facilities at Wonthaggi's nationally significant heritage coal mine.

Minister Ferguson said: “The identified improvements will ensure the protection and conservation of the unique coal mining heritage and the historic features and buildings of the site. The State Coal Mine is one of only four black coal mines in the world accessible to the public, making it a unique heritage and tourist attraction."

"The key benefit is to provide economic growth within the region by attracting international, interstate and domestic tourists."

"The Gippsland Region has recently suffered from severe floods in mid 2007 and harsh bushfires over the 2006/2007 summer period. These natural disasters have impacted heavily on the local communities and this project will help the region renew its tourism product."

"It will provide an opportunity for tourists to connect with the fabric of the past, to learn about the cultural history of the region, or simply to enjoy the outdoor spaces for a picnic or a walk."

"The project also provides a focal point for participation and volunteerism in the community with a friends group of over 500 members given the opportunity to contribute their expertise and skills.

"It is a great example of how regional tourism can bring together communities while helping to boost the local economy through increased tourist visitations."

"Tourism provides the opportunity for all regional communities to strengthen their future economic sustainability and this project will help achieve this for the Wonthaggi community.

"The project will also allow the mine to continue to serve as a focal point in the Bass Coast Shire’s Coal Heritage Precinct Strategy and contribute to the broader development of an “iconic” tourism based strategy for the region.

"The Federal Government is pleased to be a partner in this project which has been made possible thanks to a strong partnership between the community, Parks Victoria and the Victorian State Government," the Minister concluded.
