Good afternoon and thank you for the opportunity to be here today.
This joint venture agreement marks another important chapter in the long history of cooperation between Australia and Japan in the resources industry.
It was Japanese investment in the Pilbara that put WA on the map as the world's leading iron ore province.
It was Japanese investment in long-term supply contracts that underpinned the development of Australia's LNG industry.
And it is Japanese investment that will bring this mine to life.
This is further evidence of Australia's welcoming attitude to foreign investment - investment that will bring new jobs to Australia and reliable energy to Japan.
I congratulate Mega Uranium, the Japan Australia Uranium Development Company and Itochu Corporation for their commitment to this project and the regulations governing uranium mining in Australia.
These principles ensure that Australian uranium is only used for peaceful purposes.
We also ensure our uranium mines meet the most stringent environmental, health, safety and safeguards requirements.
The Australian Government will work with the West Australian Government to ensure the highest standards are met and the greatest economic benefit results.
As a long-time supporter of a vibrant uranium industry in Australia, I am proud to witness today's development, which will provide economic advancement for Australia, jobs for regional Australians, exports, and opportunities for indigenous communities.
The Australian Government strongly supports the further development of the Australian uranium industry.
It is an industry which can provide a significant long-term economic benefit to Australia and also make a major contribution to the global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
It is becoming increasingly clear that concerns relating to energy security and climate change are set to drive a significant increase in global demand for uranium.
Australia's reputation as a reliable uranium supplier is already well-known and well-earned.
With more than one-third of the world's uranium resources in our possession, Australia is looking to meet the growing demand from important trading partners, such as Japan.
On behalf of the Australian Government, I offer my sincere congratulations and I wish you well.
