Update on Progress to Control Leaking Montara Well

02 November 2009

The Government remains deeply concerned about the ongoing fire on the West Atlas drilling rig and Montara wellhead platform, and the continuing flow of oil and gas from the leaking Montara well.

Minister for Resources and Energy, Martin Ferguson, said the relief well has successfully intercepted the pipe of the leaking well and that operations are continuing to kill the well, including ensuring the mud mixture is properly weighted.

"The safety of personnel is of absolute importance,"he said. "Therefore some operations can only be carried out in daylight hours and may have to be held over until tomorrow."

"We all want the flow of oil and gas to be stopped as soon as possible, but the company must also stay focussed on achieving that safely."

"From day one our top priorities have been the safety of people and the protection of the environment.Stopping the flow of oil and gas safely and as soon as possible remains our prime objective.

"Some of the world's leading experts are working to fix the leaking well and respond to this latest problem.

"I am seeking regular advice on this matter from PTTEP, my department, Geoscience Australia and NOPSA, as well as some of the best minds and most experienced hands in the industry.I am advised that the technical approach being taken and the resources being applied to control the well and stop the flow of oil and gas remains the safest and best available."
