Two of Western Australia's iconic destinations have joined the Australian Government's National Landscapes program.
"Great South West Edge and Ningaloo-Shark Bay are two of Australia's most spectacular natural and cultural environments," said the Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Perth.
"National Landscapes capture the essence of Australia - places of cultural, natural and spiritual significance. They bring a strategic approach to tourism and conservation, highlighting Australia's world-class experiences.
"Visitors can get off the beaten track, immerse themselves in the environment and connect with our culture."
The National Landscapes program is a partnership between Tourism Australia and Parks Australia. It draws together community and regional organisations with an interest in promoting these special places. It also helps regional tourism operators develop quality tourism products and services, celebrating the unique environmental landscape.
Great South West Edge stretches from the Tuart Forrest north of Busselton, along the coastline to Cape Arid and Esperance.
Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities Tony Burke said the inclusion of the two iconic destinations would build on the success of the National Landscapes program in recognising Australia's unique sites.
"The Gillard Government understands how important it is to treasure our unique landscapes," Mr Burke said.
"Great South West Edge is home to an environment of unique, pristine and highly diverse wilderness.
"Ningaloo-Shark Bay is another of Western Australia’s spectacular natural assets."
Australia's Red Centre and Kakadu are already part of the National Landscapes program as are the Australian Alps, the Greater Blue Mountains, the Flinders Ranges, the Great Ocean Road, Australia's Green Cauldron, Kangaroo Island, The Kimberley, and Australia's Coastal Wilderness.
