A new Safe Supervisor Competency Project launched today at the Offshore Project Safe Group forum in Perth will foster greater safety among supervisors in the offshore oil and gas industry.
By offering essential basic skills training for supervisors to ensure the safety of teams and individuals, it builds on the success of the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association’s Common Safety Training Program.
Welcoming the new project Minister for Resources and Energy congratulated the petroleum industry for its efforts to increase safety in the industry.
"Supervisors are among the principal custodians of a company's safety culture," Minister Ferguson said.
"Through supervisors, the value of safety – that all companies must implacably stand for – flows to the rest of the team. This project will ensure that's done consistently. With so many workers moving from job to job, consistency across the board is vital.
"The Common Safety Training Program and the Safe Supervisor Competency Project complement each other. They both lay the foundations for a lifetime of safe working.
"The Safe Supervisor Competency Project is another tangible sign of industry’s commitment to safety. I urge supervisors to make the best possible use of it."
Minister Ferguson thanked the Offshore Project Safe Group, APPEA, the CEO Safety Leadership Forum, NOPSA and all the project's contributors from government, industry and the workforce and said this type of initiative from industry complements action the Government is taking to also improve safety in the offshore petroleum industry and improve regulatory frameworks.
"Our response to the Montara Commission of Inquiry and the Productivity Commission’s review of upstream operations is part of a comprehensive strategy for safety," Minister Ferguson said.
"That's why we're establishing a single, national regulator and why we are focussed on encouraging a culture of continuous improvement. It is great to see industry matching these efforts with its own initiatives."
