Rudd Government Supports Snowy Tourism Venture

27 March 2009

The Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, the Hon Dr Mike Kelly AM MP, today launched the recently completed Snowy Vineyard Estate refurbishment on behalf of the Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP.

The project received funding of $100,000 through the Australian Tourism Development Program (ATDP) to develop a multipurpose tourism complex on the existing vineyard, incorporating a tasting room, function facilities, restaurant and cellar door.

Snowy Vineyard Estate is Australia's coldest climate vineyard, with rare plantings of specialist cold climate grapes. Situated just 14 km off the Kosciuszko Road - the route to the popular ski resorts Thredbo and Perisher - the vineyard is an easy side trip for visitors to the Snowy Mountains.

Dr Kelly said: "Locals know there is more to this region than skiing, but the statistics show that tourists don't know this.In 2008 of the 618,000 tourists only 15 per cent visited in the summer period. This is why it is such a pleasure to launch this tourism project which will attract visitors all year-round.

"The importance of the ski season for the tourism industry here very important and valued, but with the addition of quality and versatile tourism businesses the region will be able to attract more visitors for the greater part of the year."

Minister Ferguson said: "Latest figures show that in 2008 around two million visitors made day trips to wineries. Snowy Vineyard Estate can now join the competition to draw those visitors to this region, while contributing to the diversity of attractions here."

"Through supporting quality tourism initiatives, the Rudd Government aims to increase visitation and add to the diversity of tourism experiences, especially in rural and regional Australia. Tourism provides vital economic stimulus and jobs for communities in regions such as the Snowy Mountains."

The ATDP offers grants to develop the tourism industry by supporting projects that promote tourism development in regional and rural Australia, contribute to long-term economic growth and increase visitation.
