Restoration of Avenue of Honour Commences

08 May 2009

The Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP, and the Member for Ballarat, Catherine King, today attended an event to recognise the commencement of restoration works to the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour and said the Australian Government is very pleased to be providing $500,000 to this important initiative.

The funding was a 2007 Election commitment and will be used to restore the 3.3 km memorial avenue that honours World War I soldiers from the Bacchus Marsh region. It will also help increase local tourism through improved facilities such as parking and visitor amenities.

Minister Ferguson said: "Tourism is exceptionally important to rural and regional areas as it boosts trade and provides local jobs.

"The Australian Government is pleased to support the work of local communities, like Bacchus Marsh, which are working hard to improve the look and feel of their area, while preserving their history and heritage."

The Avenue of Honour is a memorial avenue planted by the Bacchus Marsh community in 1918. Australian Government funding will help ensure the health of the 312 trees along the Avenue for years to come, while funding for branding, marketing and visitor infrastructure will increase the tourism potential of this local landmark.

Ms King said: "By maintaining the health of this magnificent memorial, our community, our local tourism operators, and all associated businesses will be able to benefit from the increased awareness and interest.

"The infrastructure improvements and visitor amenities the Australian Government will also be funding will allow more visitors to appreciate this great location in comfort and allow them to appreciate the beauty and significance of this memorial.

"Australian Government funding to restore this Avenue will help Bacchus Marsh lift its profile as a tourism destination within the popular Moorabool Region."

The Australian Government is funding tourist infrastructure upgrades such as road upgrades, improved signage, and information campaigns across the country to help regions make the most of their tourist potential and help the tourism industry increase visitor numbers and yield.
