Ravensthrope Nickel Operation Opened

23 May 2008

The Minister for Resources and Energy, the Hon Martin Ferguson AM MP, has today jointly opened the $2.31 billion Ravensthorpe Nickel Operation with the Western Australian Premier, the Hon Alan Carpenter, MLA.

Minister Ferguson said: "It is pleasing to observe the commitment that BHP Billiton has made, not only to the extraction of nickel ore, but also to value-adding.

"Processing means Australia can maximise economic benefit from our nickel endowment and increase our nickel export earnings, which last year exceeded $8 billion.

"This is largely due to the extraordinary impact growth in China has had on world commodities.

"This influence is set to continue, with ABARE forecasting world nickel consumption over the next five years to grow by around 6.5 per cent per annum.

"BHP Billiton's multi-billion dollar greenfield investment at Ravensthorpe will help cement the company's place as one of the world's top nickel producers and it will also serve to reinforce Australia's standing as a resources powerhouse.

"But more importantly - this project will invigorate the economy of Ravensthorpe and the surrounding region.

"A wastewater treatment plant is now operating in Hopetoun with support from the Western Australian Government and I congratulate Premier Carpenter on that investment.

"Further commitments have also been made to healthcare and education facilities, road upgrades, and a modern airport.

"The local economy is set to benefit significantly from BHP Billiton's decision to minimise its use of a fly-in fly-out workforce."
