Positive Signs Boost Tasmanian Tourism

12 October 2009

The Tasmanian tourism industry has received a boost with the launch of the Huon Trail Brand Implementation Project, an Australian Government funded initiative which brought signage and infrastructure improvements to the region south of Hobart.

The Huon Valley Council received a tourism development grant of more than $331,000 to develop tourism infrastructure and make the area more accessible and attractive to tourists.

The project involved the development of strategic tourism plans and infrastructure across four key sub-regions of southern Tasmania: the Far South, Huon Valley, D'Entrecasteaux Channel and Bruny Island.

The project was officially launched today by the Member for Franklin, Julie Collins MP, on behalf of the Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP.

Ms Collins said: "Tourism is integral to our economy and especially the economic vibrancy of regional communities.

"The Huon Trail Brand Implementation Project will make this region better known and more attractive to tourists. The additional signage, self-guide maps and improvements to attractions such as the Whale Sculpture at Cockle Creek, the information shelter at Franklin and the Huonville foreshore will encourage even more tourists to visit the region."

Minister Ferguson said: "With its stunning natural beauty, amazing walking trails and fascinating history, Tasmania is already a magnificent tourist destination.

"But by improving the signage, maintaining existing attractions, and developing a branding strategy for the area, this project will help the region's tourism industry enjoy even more success well into the future."

On 15 April 2009, Minister Ferguson announced the $8.5 million TQUAL Grants program will replace the Australian Tourism Development Program. Funding announcements will be made in the near future.
