The Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, the Hon Dr Mike Kelly AM MP, today launched the Kings Highway to Discovery project in Canberra on behalf of the Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP.
The project will promote tourism in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, notably the attractions and activities which can be undertaken along the Kings Highway - the major thoroughfare linking Canberra and the NSW south coast - in towns such as Braidwood, Bungendore and Nelligen.
Dr Kelly said: "It is estimated approximately 3 million vehicles use the Kings Highway every year, yet too few of them are aware of the wonderful tourism opportunities these towns offer. The interactive website and strong marketing support that the Australian Government is assisting through the Australian Tourism Development Program aims to bring some of those 3 million visitors into the towns.
"The potential from this project is enormous. The Australian Government has recognised this which is why we are backing this project with funding of $250,000.
"If just 10 per cent of the road's users were to stop and spend around $20 in these towns, then it would mean an extra $6 million going directly into the local economy. The Kings Highway to Discovery initiative aims to change the perception of the Kings Highway from a thoroughfare to a gateway to the region and a destination in its own right."
The Australian Tourism Development Program offers grants to develop the tourism industry by supporting projects that promote tourism development in regional and rural Australia, contribute to long-term economic growth and increase visitation.
Minister Ferguson said: "Increasing the knowledge of travellers is a great way to increase tourism yield. When people know the attractions of a region, they are more likely to explore and stay for longer.
"Sadly, too few people know what's on offer in their own backyard. The Kings Highway to Discovery website will become a valuable resource and increase consumer knowledge and help towns along the Kings Highway make the most of their significant tourism potential."
