Investment in Great Ocean Road's Green Image

01 September 2009

The Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP, last night launched Geelong Otway Tourism's 'Creating a Sustainable Tourism Environment Along the Great Ocean Road' project, which will provide tourism operators on the Great Ocean Road opportunities to enhance their green image.

The project received a $389,200 grant from the Australian Government which will also fund the publication of The Complete Guide to the Great Ocean Road launched by the Minister.

Speaking at the launch in Torquay, Minister Ferguson said the grant would include an incentive scheme and a code of conduct to encourage tourism operators to enhance their reputation for sustainable tourism. There would also be advice for visitors on ways to leave a smaller environmental footprint.

Minister Ferguson said: "The Great Ocean Road is a world-class attraction and one of Tourism Australia's nine National Landscapes. I congratulate Geelong Otway Tourism and applaud their continuing role in promoting the region as a sustainable, world-class destination for visitors.

"Importantly, this project will encourage sustainable tourism practices by industry and tourists and attract greater numbers of environmentally-conscious visitors to the Great Ocean Road."

Minister Ferguson said a resilient, sustainable and innovative tourism industry was integral to Australia's economic success.

"The Australian Government wants more than short-term marketing fixes for the tourism industry. Our focus is on the long-term. Only a sustainable, resilient industry will create jobs we can count on. The prosperity of regional communities - especially on the Great Ocean Road - depends upon it.

"Investment in tourism is investment in jobs. That means tourism is more than just a nice-to-have during economic recovery.Tourism is a must-have for recovery, especially in regional communities. You are too important to our nation's prosperity, and this Government is determined to see you thrive," he said.
