Indigenous Australia to Play Greater Role

The Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP, has told the Australian Indigenous Tourism Conference in Townsville that Australia's unique Indigenous cultures will play a greater role in future Australian tourism marketing, reflecting the growing sector's significant contribution to Australia's international appeal.

Minister Ferguson said: "Tourism offers a unique opportunity for Indigenous Australia.It allows communities to showcase their cultures while maintaining and strengthening community identity in their local region.

"The Australian Government is keen to assist Indigenous communities take advantage of tourism opportunities and see both traditional and innovative Indigenous tourism products develop for the benefit of local communities and the tourism industry."

Minister Ferguson announced the Australian Government would provide support to engage Indigenous people in the National Landscapes program.A partnership between Tourism Australia and Parks Australia, National Landscapes identifies Australia's exceptional natural and cultural experiences and promotes them in the international market.

Minister Ferguson said the funding will be used to assist Indigenous people in these regions to explore what tourism could mean for them and to provide an avenue for them to be involved in tourism.

Indigenous tourism experiences will also play a greater role in Tourism Australia's broader marketing programs.Tourism Australia will assist Indigenous tourism businesses to better link into domestic and international distribution chains to ensure Indigenous products are accessible to a broader market.

Minister Ferguson said: "We today have more than 250 Indigenous tourism experiences in Australia offering international visitors - and Australians alike - the opportunity to learn about and experience Australia's Indigenous cultures.

"To further promote this market, the Australian Government will release the third edition of the National Indigenous Tourism Product manual next month. This will showcase approximately 200 Indigenous tourism experiences, including festivals, events, performing arts and cultural activities.

"Last year, the Australian Government pledged that we would lead a national effort to close the gap in health and education and open economic opportunities for Indigenous Australians. This has long been a passion of mine and I am very pleased that my Department and Tourism Australia will be able to play a role in developing this important market segment."
