Historic Perth Tourist Drawcard Refurbished

20 February 2009

The Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP, has officially launched the refurbishment of South Perth's Old Mill and stressed the importance of preserving attractions possessing such tourism , heritage, and educational significance.

Minister Ferguson said: "Local heritage such as South Perth's iconic Old Mill is extremely important and offers enormous tourism potential.

"The Old Mill tells the story of the region, the story of the people of the time, how they lived, and their ingenuity. And if - as a visitor - you want to understand all that, then this is the only place you can see it.

"Not only does the Old Mill date to the first decade of European Settlement, it also survives as a reminder of the technology of the day, being wind driven.

"The importance the Old Mill holds to the community in South Perth can be seen in the dedication of the South Perth Historical Society to its restoration."

The project received $75,000 in Australian Government funding, committed during the 2007 election. The funding will be used to help repair the leaking roof in the cottage at the Mill and the Mill itself, as well as addressing corrosion.

Other aspects of the refurbishment include:

  • Preservation work to address deterioration of the Old Mill and Cottage buildings;
  • Painting and installation of modern visitor facilities; and
  • Improving signage and the building facade.

Minister Ferguson said: "The Australian Government is rebuilding this heritage landmark because attractions such as this go a long way to increasing tourism visitation and providing benefit to other businesses in the area.

"The Old Mill is the oldest industrial site in Western Australia. It is a remnant of the first decade of European settlement in Western Australia and has considerable community and historical significance."
