Grand Pacific Drive Launched Today

19 August 2008

The Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP, today launched the scenic 140km Grand Pacific Drive; a central component of Tourism Wollongong's long-term economic strategy to increase visitation to the New South Wales South Coast.

The project, which is led by Tourism Wollongong, was supported by the Australian Government with a $499,700 Australian Tourism Development Program grant.

Minister Ferguson said the Grand Pacific Drive - Sydney to Wollongong and Beyond - takes in scenic routes through the Royal National Park, Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama and Shoalhaven, and provides links to the Southern Highlands and Canberra.

The funding developed an integrated marketing campaign including brochures and maps, print and television advertising, web development, and directional and interpretive signage along the route.

Minister Ferguson said: "The project provides funding to encourage tourists to travel around these breathtaking parts of the New South Wales south coast and help provide a rewarding and comfortable tourism experience.

"The signage displays are there to showcase the diverse array of regional products, and historical and cultural experiences for local and international tourists."

Minister Ferguson also noted the hard work of the stakeholders in the project including Tourism Wollongong, Tourism Shellharbour, Tourism Kiama, Tourism Shoalhaven, Tourism Southern Highlands, Australian Capital Tourism and Wollongong City Council.

Minister Ferguson said: "This is a fantastic holiday destination - and being so close to Sydney there is an enormous pool of holiday makers and tourists at the region's doorstep. By banding together, the region's tourism bodies can offer tourists a diverse and enjoyable experience.

"The region is now in an exciting position to continue marketing and promotion as a major touring route to rival others throughout Australia and the world."
