Government Strengthening Tropical North Queensland's Web Presence

12 November 2009

The Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP has welcomed the launch of the Tropical North Queensland (TNQ) website, which forms part of a long term tourism strategy to reposition the region.

The website is just one part of the Australian Government's $4 million New Destination Road Map for Tropical North Queensland announced in August 2008 following the withdrawal of air services from Japan. The Road Map aims to reposition the region in the long term, promote new tourism experiences and encourage flexibility in the tourism industry to adapt to changing economic conditions and consumer trends.

The website was officially launched by the Member for Leichhardt, Mr Jim Turnour MP, on behalf of the Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP.

Minister Ferguson said: "A funding grant of $275,000 has allowed the TNQ region to redevelop the TNQ website by introducing innovative web-based technologies; install web-cameras around the Cairns region to allow for live viewing of parts of the region over the internet and provide workshops on how tourism businesses could take advantage of the internet for communication and business promotion. It is an important addition to the New Destination Roadmap for Tropical North Queensland.

Mr Turnour said: "Web based technology is a powerful tool enabling millions of visitors from around the world to access information and book holidays and business travel. By significantly upgrading their web presence, Tourism Tropical North Queensland is able to more effectively market the destination and service its customers."
