Cruise Study Shows Potential for Growth

25 May 2010

The Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP, has launched new research findings into cruise ship tourism in Darwin, showing its potential to drive growth into the Darwin tourism industry. The report shows that the cruise segment has significant potential to increase the number of visitors to Darwin, and encourage repeat visitors.

Minister Ferguson said: "The cruise ship industry is an $18.4 million industry for the Northern Territory. The increase in cruise ship passengers into Darwin provides an opportunity for tourism businesses to compete for their disposable dollar and provide products which encourage passengers to seek new on shore opportunities throughout the Northern Territory."

The Australian cruise ship industry had a record year in 2008-9 with a 12% increase in the number of cruise ships, 34% increase in passenger days and 33% increase in crew days at port compared with the previous year.

Minister Ferguson said "Last year, tourism provided over 100,000 jobs, and contributed almost $2 billion to the Northern Territory economy. The Australian Government is providing our tourism industry with the right market intelligence for business to explore new market opportunities, plan for the future, and achieve both sustainable and long-term growth."

Overall, cruise visitors reported high levels of satisfaction with their experience in Darwin. New wharf facilities were well received by visitors, as were the activities on offer such as shopping, cultural and historical attractions, and high quality package tours.

Minister McCarthy said: "Darwin is a key destination on international cruise ship itineraries and it is a testament to our fair city that a number of international vessels have included us on their maiden voyage. The increase in cruise passengers into Darwin is great for business, great for our international reputation and great for local employment."

The $100,000 Darwin Cruise Ship Passenger Survey was developed by Tourism Research Australia, in partnership with the Northern Territory government. Findings from the report will be used to develop future studies into the economic value of the cruise ship industry both in the Northern Territory, and nationally.
