The Huon Nature Trust Eco Development Project was launched today in Ranelagh, Tasmania byMs Julie Collins MP, Federal Member for Franklin on behalf of the Minister for Tourism Martin Ferguson AM MP.
The project received $100,000 in Australian Government assistance through the Australian Tourism Development Program to construct an eco-chalet, walking trails, signage and interpretation for the tourism business Huon Bush Retreats which operates in the private conservation area covered by the Mt Misery Reserve Pty Ltd.
Minister Ferguson said: "By expanding its capacity and offering a unique range of environmentally sustainable accommodation options even more visitors will be able to visit this beautiful area and experience its old growth forests."
Since establishing Huon Bush Retreats, owners Paul Dimmick and Michael Higgins have maintained their commitment to building an environmentally sustainable tourism enterprise.
Ms Collins said: "This approach makes sense. There is a demand for quality sustainable tourism attractions because people want to come here and engage with our diverse and abundant flora, fauna and natural attractions while minimising their environmental impact.
Minister Ferguson said: "Sustainable development of our natural attractions allows the considerable economic benefits of tourism to flow to communities through employment and business opportunities while preserving our natural attractions for future generations.
"The need for conservation should not prevent sensible tourism development. Owners Paul and Michael here have shown that you can strike the right balance between tourism development and conservation."
Yesterday Minister Ferguson announced $8.5 million for tourism projects through the Government's new funding program, Tqual Grants, which replaces the Australian Tourism Development Program.
"Through Tqual Grants, the tourism industry now has access to Australian Government grants that encourage innovation and quality - these are essential to the sustainability of the sector and the 500,000 Australians employed in tourism."
