Richmond has added a new attraction to southern Tasmania’s tourism industry, with the help of $110,000 from the Australian Government’s T-QUAL Grants program.
The Wicked Cheese Company has opened a new cheesery stocking fine produce from around the region. With new tasting rooms, the creators of award-winning cheeses have brought another tourism drawcard to Richmond’s local economy.
The project was officially launched in Richmond today by the Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP, and the Member for Franklin, Julie Collins MP.
“This project creates even more reasons for people to visit Richmond,” said Minister Ferguson.
“With a new site, the Wicked Cheese Company is blending the heritage of this old town and its historic appetite for fine produce with a very modern approach to business to create a unique offering for tourists to the region. New demonstration rooms alongside a café will be assets to Richmond’s economy for years to come.
“If just one project offers more reasons to visit, the local economy around it will benefit from extra spending. And that’s a boon to southern Tasmania where tourism is among the biggest employers.”
Ms Collins says this kind of investment plays a valuable role in Tasmania’s economy.
“As well as its own brands, the new tasting room at The Wicked Cheese Company stocks many other local products including olive oil and fruit pastes, highlighting this region’s reputation as a quality food and wine destination,” Ms Collins said.
“In Hobart and surrounding areas, nearly five thousand businesses rely on tourism to some extent, many of them small businesses. Innovative ways to attract visitors, whether it’s a fresh twist on an ancient craft, or a novel way for people to enjoy our beautiful landscape are essential to help local businesses thrive.”
The 2012 round of T-QUAL Grants - Tourism Quality Projects is open for applications. Grants of up to $110,000 are available for projects across Australia that add value to local tourism industries.
Last year, the Australian Government allocated nearly $8.5 million to 117 projects across Australia, part of the $40 million over four years for T-QUAL Grants.
